7-Day Atlas Mountains Trek

After breakfast in Matat, the trek begins with a gentle climb that gradually takes you deeper into the magnificent Azzaden Valley. The path winds through orchards of walnut and apple trees, with stone-built Berber villages nestled against the slopes. You’ll pass farmers working their terraced fields and encounter mule trains carrying goods along the old mountain paths, offering a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of the High Atlas.

As you ascend higher, the scenery becomes more dramatic. The lush valley floor gives way to juniper and pine forests, and the sound of running water follows you from the streams that feed the valley. Along the route, there are chances to stop and admire the Ighouliden waterfalls, one of the hidden gems of the Azzaden Valley, cascading down the cliffs in a spectacular display.

The trail continues with a steady uphill section, offering wide panoramic views back over the valley and across to the snow-capped peaks in the distance (in winter and early spring). This part of the trek is a true highlight, combining both natural beauty and cultural encounters.

By late afternoon, you reach the Refuge of Tamsoult (2,250m), a simple but welcoming mountain hut set in a quiet location surrounded by rugged peaks. Here, you’ll settle in for the evening, enjoy a freshly cooked dinner prepared by the trekking team, and rest in preparation for the next day’s journey toward the higher slopes of the Atlas Mountains.
